The race is this Saturday!! I am so excited to see everything come together. This has been crazy and I can not believe that it is all coming to an end. I don't know the amount raised but I know we have had so many donations, and the walk is the biggest so far.
This class has been a great experience, through out it I have gained many valuable skills that will help me in the future. I was able to explore a different side of independence and I got a taste of the business world. This class has been extremely valuable, in both leadership development, and personal development. I have made contacts, and gained new friends along the way. I can not imagine my senior year any other way.

The walk is 20 days away, and now its just trying to make sure everything is gathered and prepared. We are still working on collecting little things just to add a little extra something special. Hanging signs, picking things up, and just talking strategy is what it has come down to. We are very excited. This week the goal is to just keep pushing through, I am going to message Amanda and see what else she needs from me. But, it is very close and quickly approaching.
I went to Carmel and Fishers on Wednesday to drop off volunteer flyers The lady at Carmel took the flyer and is going to email it to all of the student reps and have them post it on their communication boards. The lady a Fishers gave me the emails of their National Honor Society reps and I am going to email them the information to post around their school/hand out to their members. They will be able to use the hours for NHS. Since the lady at Carmel only needed one flyer I still have a lot of flyers that I can hang up. So I think I am going to go back out to Carmel next Wednesday and hang them around the stores and in town. Hopefully people will actually stop and read them!
To help prepare for the walk Amanda has asked for me to find as many volunteers as I can. They will be helping work registration, playing with kids, passing out foods, and more. In order to make this walk successful we NEED as many volunteers that we can get. I have made flyers that I am going to take to Carmel High School (the walk is in Carmel), Fishers, and maybe other surrounding schools. Volunteers get a free t-shirt and they can use these hours for something bigger than themselves. The walk is May 19, so we have some time to build up the numbers; however, it's not as long as we think it is. Attached is a picture of the flyer that I made. The Trivia night was last weekend and unfortunately I was unable to go. However, from the updates that I have been following it went super well! Now we are looking at the walk that takes place in late March! Amanda is going to send me a to do list that we can make this walk the biggest one yet! I am so excited to see how it all plans out and I will keep updating as the plans for the walk grow!
I'm feeling a bit upset. Hailee, Louis, and I went to Fishers to talk to local business about giveaways for the trivia night. All of the businesses were really responsive, but none of them have contacted me back. It is slightly defeating. However, with the trivia night right around the corner I am trying to stay positive because we are not even close to empty handed. It still would've been nice to secure more things for this awesome night! I'm planning on touching base with Amanda within the next couple days, at the moment she is doing amazing things with the Ymca in Florida. I'll update again soon...
I am super excited to hit the ground running with this project.
First, let me tell you a little bit about whats going on. Angelman syndrome is a neuro-genetic disorder. It is very uncommon and is often confused with autism. It occurs in around one in 15,000 live births. This disorder can not be diagnosed until the child is around a year old. It causes development issues related to walking and speech. People diagnosed with angelman usually have seizures and a love for water. Now, lets relate this to what I am doing. At the YMCA I met the beautiful Moore family. Amanda and her husband Adam are parents to two beautiful twins. Jackson; however, has been diagnosed with Angelman syndrome, where as his brother Baden has not. Jackson's smile is contagious and seeing him brightens your day, no matter how bad it has been Jackson always makes you feel better. This has grown to be one of my favorite parts about coming to work. The goal: I am partnering with Amanda, who is on the National Angelman Syndrome foundation board, to help raise awareness and money for this disorder. I am assisting her in projects she already has growing and helping to contribute new ideas as well. Two of my classmates, Hailee Holberton and Louis Holbrook, will be joining in me as I help Amanda. I am super excited to begin this journey! |
